Cunningham Socks

Cunningham Ankle Socks

by Vicki Peterson ~ http://purpleisafruit.blogspot.com/
Materials
sock yarn
2.75mm 40" circ
tape measure
yarn needle
These socks were made with the magic loop method.

I knit a littler tighter than others, you might have to do down a 1/2 size.

Cuff

Cast on 64 sts
K1 tbl, P1 around for 5 rows, if you'd like your sock a bit taller ( to cover your ankle knit for 20 - 25 rows)

Heel flap

on the same needle that you just finished knitting on slip 1, purl across and slip the last st

row 1 - p1, *k1, sl1* across to last st, purl last st
row 2 - sl1, purl across to last st, sl1
repeat 17 times or for 2.5 inches.
Turn heel
1 - WS - sl1, p20, p2tog, turn
2 - RS - sl1, k10, sl1, k1, psso, turn
3 - WS, sl1, p10, p2tog, turn

repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 12 sts remaining.

Gusset

pick up and knit 18 sts (slipped sts plus one extra) I pick up one extra st up by the ribbing to prevent a hole.
knit across the ribbing sts, then pick up another 18 sts, knit 6 sts from heel turn onto the other needle.
This will even out all your sts and give you a loop'd'loop'd'loop, you should have 24 sts, 32 sts and another 24 sts on the circ.
knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1, knit across ( where your ribbing is), k1, ssk, k to end
knit next round even
repeat these 2 rounds until you have 16 sts on each gusset side
knit the first 16 sts onto the same needle ( you will now continue with the regular magic loop, 2 loops instead of 3)

Arch Support

k1 tbl, p1 around for 2 inches
Foot
knit plain until the foot measures 2 inches shorter than the total foot length. Measure this from the picked up sts of the heel flap.

Toe Decreases

k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 ( repeat on other needle)
knit next row even.
Repeat until you have 10 sts on each needle.
Kitchener sts together.
Avoid the second sock syndrome by casting on for sock 2 right now!!
